Toga 1
Panel 1
Rakka: Excuse me...
SFX: pat pat
Panel 4
Toga: Haa haa [it's supposed to be the sound of heavy breathing]

Toga 2
Panel 1
Rakka: Um... Thank you so much; you saved me.
Panel 2
Rakka: Oh! Wait!
SFX: swish swish [supposed to be the sound of the toga's feet rustling through the grass as they walk, or perhaps just the noise that their clothing as they walk off, or perhaps both]
Panel 3
Rakka: It seems that a Haibane named Kuu has gone over the wall!
Rakka: She's a friend of mine! Do you happen to know anything about her?
Panel 4
Rakka (in the background -- upper right): "Waaait"
Toga on right: "Alright! I got me one of Rakka's sandals!"
Toga on left: "We're so awesome"
SFX on right: flick flick [It's "washi washi" in Japanese, and I really have no idea what it's supposed to mean except some kind of onomatopoeia for the motion of signing with one's hands. Maybe it has to do with the communicator, Washi?]
SFX on left: Haa haa

Halos
Panel 1
Hikari: We got two DVD's
Kana: Nice! Good work.
Panel 2
Kana: Huh? What's this?
Hikari: "First Time Special Service. Even you can become a Haibane! Just like a real glowing halo." That's what it says.
Panel 3
Kana: Man, we got enough glowing halos as it is. Won't be needin' that
Panel 4
Old Home Lady (I think): Heh, heh, heh... Now I'm a cute little Haibane, too!
SFX on right: Heh, heh, heh... [It's actually different from the laughter that shows up in her speech, but I can't think of a good way to differentiate the sounds in English right now. ウフフフ is mischievous, while クックック is maybe a bit more sinister?)
Reki: What're you doing, Grandma?
Un-bubbled text on left: What are you, an idiot?

Clothes
Panel 1
Rakka: Geez... There aren't a lotta good clothes here, huh...
Panel 2
Nemu: They're old clothes, so everything is pretty plain. I've got some clothes over here I think you'll like!
Rakka: Oh! Really?

Panel 2
Kana: Now spinning more than usual!
Panel 3
Reki: YOUR HALO IS NOT A TOY!!

Reki literally says something more like "DON'T MAKE YOUR HALO INTO A TOY!!", but that doesn't sound right in English. Another possibility would be "DON'T PLAY WITH YOUR HALO!!" or "DON'T USE YOUR HALO AS A TOY!!", but I like the first phrasing best.

Does anyone have good photos of people cosplaying ABe's work? I hardly ever see Haibane Renmei cosplay in particular, this is my friend's Reki from Otakon this past weekend.

I just recently cosplayed Rakka for Sacanime, but it was really rushed with crappy wings and halo, so it's nowhere near as good as these. I feel inferior.

Hello! I'm Japanese(so please permit my mistake in English).

Although this topic may not seem very serious, I'd like to take an objective approach to it. Ever since I saw Lain, my experience with ABe has been wonderful. I think his attention to fundamental questions of life is unparalled. But also, since then, something has been nagging me (not in a bad way), and I think I've figured out what it is. In everything I've seen from him, there seems to be a very subtle homosexual undertone to some of the female relationships. It's never anything all that obvious, and I don't think I'm imagining things. If there are lesbian undertones, I think it just adds to loveliness of his work. What does everything think about this?

Yes, it's true. But I think there is nothing sexual on these kind of platonic loves, in my opinion is other way of feeling love. You must know these feeling to discuss about this, but you are partialy right.

I thought ABe wasn't involved in creating the story for Lain. Wasn't he just in charge of character design, as in visual character design?

>> No.15

>>14

Wut?
S.E. Lain original creator is Yoshitoshi ABe, no discussion about it, but there are more people working on it. If you see mangas like White Rain and animes like haibane you see the point of view of ABe.

>> No.16

>>15
Wingless is correct, ABe was only the character designer for Lain. The only anime he is the original creator of is Haibane Renmei, since it is based off of his doujinshi The Haibanes of Old Home.

>> No.17

According to Nihonjinron (Japanese studies, usually with a nationalistic tinge), Japanese relationships tend to be closer than that of Westerners. I'd imagine that that has to be accounted for; what may look excessive in a Western setting is par for course in a Japanese setting.

>> No.18

>>16

Wasn't he the guy who came up with the story for NieA_7?

>> No.19

>>18

I think that was also written by the Lain writer, Chiaki, though ABe does have a manga based on it that was supposed to be released in the US and never was.

One of the ladies sitting at the booth, seen here staring blankly at me as I take my picture, did say something to me. She said, "Sorry, no pictures" as she made a × symbol with her fingers. Oops. With a quick すいません, I went on my way.

In other news, I didn't purchase any doujinshi. I wasn't too impressed with the sketches in f.p.o., and nothing else really caught my eye. The doujinshi I remember seeing were f.p.o., Ryuushika Ryuushika (which has a glittery title in person, actually), and some Pochiyama stuff.

Kind of a little disappointed, but oh well. :/
