I think he was involved on original idea, some episody direction or sub-direction and storyboars. The scriptwriter of S.E. Lain is Chiaki J. Konaka, but I think is highly influenced of ABe ideas.

There's a Lain one-shot ("Nightmare of Fabrication") that was included in the artbook; not sure if it was ever a doujin, properly speaking.

ANN credits him as the "original creator" as well as the character designer, and his interviews alongside Yasuyuki Ueda (who he also worked with on Haibane and Texhnolyze) seem to suggest that the two of them bounced ideas for the show back and forth during its creation.

I've never seen ABe doujinshi at a con (though I haven't looked that hard, either). Has anyone else had luck (obviously not as lucky as OP's) finding ABe doujinshi in person in the US? If so where?

Also, are there any preferred places to get or browse it online?

Same thing happened to me. Bought the doujinshi's the moment I saw them at Nan Desu Kan in Sept. Mine were signed as well :D

I'd bet you anything it was the same dealer. I went to the NDK website and the same dealer I bought from was listed there, too.

i got the same deal at ohayocon. the vendor told me that ABe came stateside for a con but they didn't advertise him and put him into a corner booth where nobody could see him, so he ended up not handing out any of the doujins he signed. the people at the vendor found him and bought out his stock. apparently he gave them a really good deal too.

lol asylum anime is the dealer's name. Just got my copies at animeiowa this past weekend.

All three volumes of Pochiyama are now available from iTunes in one package as an iPhone/iPod Touch application for $5. The translation is a little clumsy at times, and the text isn't blended seamlessly with the art, but it's quite readable in this form, and I hope they bring out his "Uchuujin" doujinshi in this form, too.

In fact, it would become my preferred way to read manga, too.

Meh. Both Rakka and Lain are shown completely naked in their respective series. Nudity =/= hentai.

There are some old, old drawings which are debatably 'hentai' in nature, but nothing as grand as a full doujin book.

I spent most of my time watching Haibane masturbating, and most of my time watching Lain sleeping.

for the better understanding:

nudity: naked girls
ecchi: girls with sexy attributes (pantyshot, cameltoe and other)
hentai: girls where have sex

what we see in hr und sel is no more than nudity, but never hentai or ecchi. and abe makes no hentai

Hiya. Had some time to kill and the board's been totally dead lately so I thought I'd make some biggies out of scans from Omnipresence in the Wired and throw 'em up here. Enjoy.

Last one. What I'd really like is an art book full of full color, full page ABe art in all its uh, fullness. Or full sized prints for individual pieces. Either way would be crazy costly I'd imagine, but do such things exist?

Not in the US, but yeah, both exist; GoFA did two sets of ABe prints, and Wani has published at least one general ABe artbook. And you're right, both of them go for a pretty penny, from what I've seen.

Why weren't those sketches in the (US) Omnipresence book? Were they published in a new version, or were they Japanese-exclusive or something?

I also liked the original cover way more than the US one, but that's another story.

They're there - check right around the middle of the book, under the section labeled "Diary on Game." They're a little small, but they were CGs for a PlayStation game.
