Pochiyama at the Pharmacy is somehow LICENSED and TRANSLATED, if you have an iPhone. So I deleted it. That's service for you!

You know, I was perfectly happy with my 2½-year old 5G iPod, even though the battery life is crap (something easily fixed with an external battery pack.) Now I have a pressing need to buy an iPod Touch.

Damn, the guy knows how to lure money back to Apple.

>> No.4

Crap. I do not have an iPhone/iPod Touch. And I probably won't, at least not until the latter comes down in price to match the former.

Actually, it looks like more of an Engrish translation...

Hey folks. I uploaded this German TV-interview with Yoshitoshi ABe and Yasuyuki Ueda two years ago at Youtube. (you probably noticed it^^) I already translated it into English but i finally started subbing it. I just finished part 1 and want you to take a look at it and report any mistakes you notice. I will continue with subbing next week and finish it within a few days. I know you deserve this 40min TV-interview.^^

That's the final script, I figure two years is enough time to work on it.

But it's pretty hard to get all that running, and I consider it no longer licensed, so I'm just going to resub the whole thing. ep1-2 should be done in a week or two.

Geneon is still around, they're just not in the distribution business any more. They've set up a deal (deals?) with Funimation to have the latter ditribute a number of titles they licensed (e.g. Kamichu, Higurashi, Nanoha, etc.), but they didn't do anything for any ABe anime. As far as I know, either Geneon still has a license for North American distribution for Haibane Renmei and simply isn't using it for anything, or the license has lapsed and no longer exists.

Ep 2 will take a little longer. I'd forgotten ther character art was so poor in that one.

>> No.19

Looking good. I thought I saw a very slight film-grain effect in the first episode; is that just compression artifacts, or something you added?

>> No.20

I added some static film grain to counteract blurring, yeah (using SeeSaw). It works better than sharpening to recover apparent detail loss.

Browsing through Youtube i found a Haibane Renmei trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n0hQ3igZtI).

The video has some scenes that never appeared on the series. Somebody have more information about it? Could be a fake video?

P.S.: I know, is a really old video, but i can't stay with the doubt. Also, picture related.

>> No.2

I'd guess this has been discussed before, but - yeah, the scene where Rakka finds the halo isn't in the series proper. The series was written free-form, not full planned in advance. Assuming the trailer was made before all the episodes were done (which seems safe, everything else is from the first episode or two), it's possible that they animated this and then decided against that plot development in the show.

Alternatively, one could possibly interpret that scene as a post-script for the show, though it doesn't quite seem to have the right mood in light of the ending.

>> No.3

The cool thing about these extra scenes, however, is that there's no inbetweening in the frames. Meaning that at the very least, they were all done by the art director; who at the time was Akira Takata. They're also very high quality, I mean literally blu-ray quality. Unfortunately they're actually a higher-quality than the show itself was, so don't get your hopes up for a blu-ray release anytime soon.

You can actually see some resemblance between his work in this trailer and the one he did for Karas the Prophecy as well, especially near the beginning;

why are they so chibi?

>> No.3

Wow! I can recognized some of those characters from different anime series in the first image, are they all in common with writers, artists, character design, producers, directors, etc? I'm a fan of Abe's works so Lain, Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze are in there. Plus some I recognize: Now and Then, Here and There, Saikano, Jigoku Shojo, NHK ni Youkoso!, Key the Metal Idol, and is that Bokurano on the far right?

Non-color image are all Abe-designed characters from the series he worked on. Thanks for the images!

>> No.4

In the first pic: also Higurashi, Elfen Lied, at least one Key show (Shuffle? never watched it), Narutaru, Welcome to the NHK, Saikano...

For most of these characters, the only connection I can see is that they done got Problems with a capital P. Except for Shuu, whose only real psychological issue is a terminal case of optimism.

>> No.5

It occurs that ABe did cover artwork for the NHK books, at least. He's also done artwork for a Key game-music album cover, I think.

Key (the character) is definitely a predecessor to Lain in a lot of ways, and you could maybe kinda see Chise as a successor. Bokurano and Narutaru, not sure... Kitoh's lineart feels a little similar to ABe's at times, although they've clearly got distinct styles.
