I can't read japanese, might this be a new show by ABe?

Google's auto-translator shows this:

>>First broadcast date: 2006/06/14
>> No.4

Apparently it was a program called "The Grammar of Digital Painting [or Drawing, really]" that explored the technique and know-how of digital artwork in Japan. The advertisement was for a special that ran 60 minutes instead of the usual 30. I've never heard of this program, but it sounds kinda neat.

The OP image is definitely ABe's -- in case the style wasn't a giveaway, his name is in the copyright at the bottom left. Maybe he appeared in the show or something?

Ah okay. Wasn't sure what it was but that seems to make sense. Found the link to it here:

http://love6.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/illustrator/1195824074/l50

Which seems to be the japanese equivalent of this board. But with a ton of broken links.

So I know that ABe is listed as being the original creator of Lain but how exactly did he create it? Was Lain based on a doujinshi he made or something?

For the longest time I thought ABe had nothing to do with the project except for character designs. I always attributed the show more to director Ryutaro Nakamura and the other staff, not ABe.

Also, looking at ANN, they have Takahiro Kishida listed as being the character designer. What the hell? I was certain ABe was.

>> No.2

Yoshitoshi was to Lain as Sadamoto was/is to Evangelion. He had a lot more to do with the project than just character designs; that's just what he's credited for.

I think the key was Chiaki Konaka, the scriptwriter. I've heard that they were friends even before ABe went to work at Triangle Staff for the SEL Playstation game project*, and some sources suggest they both collaborated on that part of the production as well as the eventual animation.

The concept in its entirity, I think, belongs to Yasuyuki Ueda; however Lain herself is a creation of Yoshitoshi ABe.

*Yes, production of the playstation game came before production of the anime, as stated by Konaka in an interview with HK, the anime was only released first.

Incidentally, Takahiro Kishida was also a character designer for Lain; though not as much for the lead characters as he was for secondary and background ones. In actuality though, his work is more prominent on screen than ABe's was.

This comic pokes fun at the interface people are forced to use when typing in Japanese on a computer. Normally, typing in Japanese basically boils down to typing the romaji equivalent of whatever Japanese you want to type. (Even Japanese people do it this way; it's not like it's just a crutch for foreigners or anything like that.) So if I wanted to write 吾輩は猫である ("I Am A Cat," a famous work of literature by Natsume Souseki), I could do it by typing wagahaihanekodearu and then hitting spacebar (which converts the phonetic script into kanji automatically). It's a useful tool, but it can be a real pain sometimes. There are times when it converts a word into kanji incorrectly (it might convert "seikou" into 性交 ("sexual intercourse") when you mean to write 成功 ("success"), for instance, because these two very different words happen to have the same reading), or when the interface arbitrarily decides that what you intended to be two words is actually one long word (which then of course gets converted incorrectly), or when the conversion you want doesn't come up on the list of possibilities (in which case you have to add the word to the interface's dictionary on your own). And since the usual interface has a number of different input modes, if you forget which mode you're in and start to type naively, the results can sometimes look nothing like what you intended. For example, if I type "chocolate bars are awesome" while in the standard Japanese input mode (as opposed to the English mode), it might come out as this gibberish: ちょこぁて場rsあれあうぇそめ

In particular, if I were to type "lain" while in the standard Japanese mode, it would come out as this: ぁいn

In the comic, Lain tries to log in to her navi, but because she didn't realize that the input mode was set to Japanese rather than English, when she types "lain" it comes out as ぁいn. The computer then assumes that this is her name and starts calling her by ぁいn (the pronunciation of which is difficult to imagine but surely bizarre in any case), much to poor little Lain's chagrin.

Title: せりあl えxぺりめんts ぁいn
[The title is gibberish, but you're supposed to be able to tell that it's what you would get if you naively typed in "serial" + enter + " experiments" + enter + "lain" + enter while in the standard Japanese input mode. Leaving out the enters would actually cause the title to become more unreadable, since it would convert some of the characters to kanji, but not only might the end result be different on different machines, but it would also be harder to decipher, which is probably why the author chose to do it this way instead. Here, all the characters are phonetic characters, and it's easier to see that "せりあl えxぺりめんts ぁいn" is supposed to be "serial experiments lain."]
Navi: "Log in...who are you?"
Lain: Oh..... User name..... Uh...um..... What should I do...? W-well, okay...

Panel 2:
Lain (Japanese at top): "Re... i... n..."
[This is the spelling of "lain" in Japanese; it consists of three units of sound, which can be seen in the Japanese: れ ("re"), い ("i"), and ん ("n").]
Lain (Roman character): L
Lain (Roman character): A
Lain (Roman character): I
Lain (Roman character): N
SFX: chak chak chak

Panel 3:
Navi (voice): ぁいn, is it?
Navi (screen): Who are you?
Navi (screen): ぁいn
Navi (screen): enter ID

Panel 4:
Lain: "Oh...! Oh... what should I do? I entered it in romaji... Um... It's lain, in English, not ぁいn...
Navi: New mail has arrived for ぁいn
Lain: Oh...! Oh...! What should I do...?? Umm...where's backspace...um....

Yeah, it's probably overkill, but I don't mean to sound snobbish or anything like that. You'll have to forgive me; it's just that talking about Japanese is one of the few things I seem to be good for recently. Probability and combinatorics are killing me in school, and the only things keeping me afloat are my friends and Japanese poetry from around the turn of the (last) century.

I meant to say this before, but for some reason I forgot: the images in this thread are nice. I'm pleased to see new lain material. I particularly like No. 8. Too bad Nos. 1 and 13 don't come in any higher resolution, though...

Hey, I wasn't showing a cold shoulder or anything. It is informative. I still couldn't get myself to finish Japanese for Beginners, see? Here's some eye candy for everybody ;D.
If you want the full 6000x3000 18.4mb version it's in the zip file I uploaded to rapid share.

Okay, well, I scanned the first 50 pages (prologue and first 2 chapters) and it was turning out great except quite a few pages have text along the edges that ended up getting blurred out, making it illegible. Pages 15, 17, 19, 25, 31 and 47 are all like that. I tried scanning it different ways to the point that I was starting to damage the pages and just gave up. Anyways, here's the link to it if anyone wants to check it out (this is the low quality version btw, full quality was 265mbs unzipped at 2000x3000px a page xD but if anyone does want a page at full quality feel free to ask), anyway, here's the link:
http://www.mediafire.com/?2iybmuzn2jj

>> No.7

Great job on the scanning, appreciate the time you took to do that. I do know a few translaters used to lurk here from time to time. Hopefully someone will help everyone out with a translation.

>> No.8

Alright, regarding the scanning, I won't be able to get more up for the next half week or so (the usual busy life issues) but I did go through and write out all the blurred text onto a text file (uploaded to MediaFire xP I realized I said rapid share for the last post). I figured as far as I knew I was the only one with the book and had to get it to you all somehow (if I can get a translation I'd be more than happy to make make an English version - utilael@aol.com if you'd care to communicate with me). I am taking a Japanese class right now so I do know the Hirigana/Katakana, and with my tablet and http://jisho.org/kanji/radicals/ I'm pretty sure I got the Kanji right. Email me if you have questions. Here's the link to the text file:

>> No.13

Well, some news, good for me ;P. ABe's portion of the slightly recent project with Range Murata, (a.k.a: robot), turned out to be Kaira, starting past the first two chapters I uploaded. If you don't have Kaira but have robot, it doesn't look at all like the story lines continue from what I uploaded, and as far as I can tell they don't. There's a big white page following the last one in the zip I uploaded with a title in Kanji on it and the story diverges (as far as I can tell, sorry if the explanations confusing).

But, this means there's a professional translation out there for all the volumes of robot that have been translated... which I don't own any of them so I can't say. I came across it when trying to decide what book to buy next, dl'd the robot volume 1 scan out of curiosity, and was like... hey, that's Kaira. So I've uploaded the next potion of the book, which is really just a section of the robot volume I downloaded, so credits to whoever it was who scanned it in the first place:
