Although this topic may not seem very serious, I'd like to take an objective approach to it. Ever since I saw Lain, my experience with ABe has been wonderful. I think his attention to fundamental questions of life is unparalled. But also, since then, something has been nagging me (not in a bad way), and I think I've figured out what it is. In everything I've seen from him, there seems to be a very subtle homosexual undertone to some of the female relationships. It's never anything all that obvious, and I don't think I'm imagining things. If there are lesbian undertones, I think it just adds to loveliness of his work. What does everything think about this?

Yes, it's true. But I think there is nothing sexual on these kind of platonic loves, in my opinion is other way of feeling love. You must know these feeling to discuss about this, but you are partialy right.

(Sorry for my english)

I thought ABe wasn't involved in creating the story for Lain. Wasn't he just in charge of character design, as in visual character design?

>> No.15

Wut?
S.E. Lain original creator is Yoshitoshi ABe, no discussion about it, but there are more people working on it. If you see mangas like White Rain and animes like haibane you see the point of view of ABe.

>> No.16

Wingless is correct, ABe was only the character designer for Lain. The only anime he is the original creator of is Haibane Renmei, since it is based off of his doujinshi The Haibanes of Old Home.

According to Nihonjinron (Japanese studies, usually with a nationalistic tinge), Japanese relationships tend to be closer than that of Westerners. I'd imagine that that has to be accounted for; what may look excessive in a Western setting is par for course in a Japanese setting.

Wasn't he the guy who came up with the story for NieA_7?

>> No.19

I think that was also written by the Lain writer, Chiaki, though ABe does have a manga based on it that was supposed to be released in the US and never was.

Well, I have all of his post-form code futuregraph pictures as well as most of his contributions to various robot volumes and some scattered game artwork I found online.

I do own a good bit of his doujins, but i've only scanned a few scattered pictures from them.

ABe was hard at work unpacking doujinshi. I didn't get the chance to chat with him, sadly. Sorry for the blur. I didn't realize how bad it was, and I was kind of trying to be discreet at the time.

One of the ladies sitting at the booth, seen here staring blankly at me as I take my picture, did say something to me. She said, "Sorry, no pictures" as she made a × symbol with her fingers. Oops. With a quick すいません, I went on my way.

In other news, I didn't purchase any doujinshi. I wasn't too impressed with the sketches in f.p.o., and nothing else really caught my eye. The doujinshi I remember seeing were f.p.o., Ryuushika Ryuushika (which has a glittery title in person, actually), and some Pochiyama stuff.

Kind of a little disappointed, but oh well. :/

The Uchuujin doujinshi was also there, as evidenced by the guy holding a copy of it in the previous picture.

Does anyone know what type of nut the ones in Haibane Renmei are closest to in real life? I'm wondering if it's even a real type of nut

>> No.2

It might have actually been a pepper. It lookeds similar to a Cascabell pepper, which also rattles once you dry it. Doesn't grow in different colors though.

Don't those wrinkle when you dry them? Not typical ''nuts'', but the closest l've seen IRL.

Linked off his blog. Quality's a bit low, so if anyone can get better scans that'd be great.

This one's from a book cover (actually yanked from the background of the book's website, it's the highest-quality pic out there).

It's a page from the Haibane of Old Home Extra doujin, which he published after the series was completed. It goes into more detail about Reki's past than the anime, but it doesn't contain any major revelations that you would've missed if you didn't read it.

It's Last Exile, and it has nothing to do with White Rain.

That said, the artbook may be connected to White Rain... there were hints that the Robot comics were going to tie into White Rain, at least thematically. Haven't got my hands on the more recent ones.
