I was going to do that too, but I opted to get two tails on the sides and then chop one off when they got long enough to just have one. Then the old chinese lady who cut my hair put the tails BEHIND my ears for some reason, so uh....looks like I have to wait another year to grow out the right part of my hair. ;_;

>>17 Yes, Jon Postel (especially like in the comic) would be scarier than Vannevar Bush. Those comics were... something, but I'm not sure what. Cheesy? Scary? Smart concepts but dumb presentation? I agree with their principles, but that is just propaganda-ish. Ironically, only someone already converted would have the patience to read the whole thing.

Sorry if it seems I'm bragging. I am, actually, but this was just so awesome. In the most amazing find in my last few years of going to conventions, I was browsing through a doujinshi box when suddenly I see Pochiyama-san staring at me. I think, 'Wow, lucky day!', because while I have most anything of state-side release, like Omnipresence, I don't have much in the way of the original doujinshis. Picking up one would make my day, if not my entire month.

So, then I look on the side where there looks to be some sort of squiggle marks. Turns out it's a signature in silver marker. ( My really lucky day! )

So I go to pick it up. And hey... it's a three pack! Yakkoku no Pochiyama-san volumes 1, 2, and 3, and they're all signed! And behind that? A copy of 'I am an Alien'. And IT'S signed.

So, after the utter elation of holding these four awesome doujins in my hand, which were actually touched by the man himself; I begin to realize... I only had about $80 in my pocket. I mean, signed, originals, mint condition... these were going to be expensive. So I ask the dealer, how much.

$50.

/floored

So I now have in my possession 4 signed ABe doujinshi for $12.50 a pop. Glorious!

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>> No.2

I've never seen ABe doujinshi at a con (though I haven't looked that hard, either). Has anyone else had luck (obviously not as lucky as OP's) finding ABe doujinshi in person in the US? If so where?

Also, are there any preferred places to get or browse it online?

Thanks, and congrats to OP on their find!

If luck works in a zero-sum system, I'd suggest you stay the hell away from Vegas and lotteries.

>> No.4

Same thing happened to me. Bought the doujinshi's the moment I saw them at Nan Desu Kan in Sept. Mine were signed as well :D

>> No.5

I'd bet you anything it was the same dealer. I went to the NDK website and the same dealer I bought from was listed there, too.

>> No.6

i got the same deal at ohayocon. the vendor told me that ABe came stateside for a con but they didn't advertise him and put him into a corner booth where nobody could see him, so he ended up not handing out any of the doujins he signed. the people at the vendor found him and bought out his stock. apparently he gave them a really good deal too.

It's a self-styled "guidebook" to the doujin music scene in Japan. The cover art was clearly made by ABe, although I wonder if he made anything for the interior (or the reverse side)...

Although this topic may not seem very serious, I'd like to take an objective approach to it. Ever since I saw Lain, my experience with ABe has been wonderful. I think his attention to fundamental questions of life is unparalled. But also, since then, something has been nagging me (not in a bad way), and I think I've figured out what it is. In everything I've seen from him, there seems to be a very subtle homosexual undertone to some of the female relationships. It's never anything all that obvious, and I don't think I'm imagining things. If there are lesbian undertones, I think it just adds to loveliness of his work. What does everything think about this?

What's wrong with platonic love?

Why not?

>> No.4

...perhaps no one understood my question?

>> No.5

I like to think of the relationships as essentially platonic, and physical interaction therein as familial or humanistic rather than sexual.

This is only personal opinion/preference, however, since as with many of the great ideas in ABe-involving projects, it is left open to interpretation. The mystery can be more interesting than the answer.

This does make me wonder, do the androgynous characteristics often present in ABe characters make them seem more asexual, homosexual, both, neither?

>> No.6

>>5 You're probably right about them being strickly platonic. I think I've been on 4 (and 7) chan for too long.

>> No.7

I think I agree; but the attraction is always one-sided. I'm not talking as a sexual attraction but it's more than just wanting to be friends; it's almost a need to be in a familial relationship, almost like a big sister complex. It's the same with Lain liking Alice, and Rakka liking Reki. To a lesser extent you see it in NIEA_7. It's always the protagonists of the story who fall into this; and what do the protagonists have in common? Alone, few friends, troubled (or no) family.

Its a little confusing to play, its more like sifting through Lain's memories, sound recordings and videos in order to understand her better...

Good to see a translation of it though...
If you want I can upload it somewhere and give you a link to it...

I like the style on this one. Searching for tfisher found an artist, but their work seems different and contained no other Lain/ABe stuff.

Any ideas on source?
