Miyazaki's girls don't seem like young girls; the way they're young girls is in a sort of symbolic way. The psychological insight is general, not specific, whereas ABe's girls seem to draw on ABe's own experience.
If you've seen Wasteland inside the Robot anthology, however, ABe seems to be branching out. Ran is a particularly interesting Texhnolyze character, but for the first time, men, like Ichise, Yoshii, and Kano, seem to have meaning beyond their relationship to the main female lead. On the other hand, Texhnolyze sucked for characterizations, and Wasteland was somewhat disappointing.
