Its a little confusing to play, its more like sifting through Lain's memories, sound recordings and videos in order to understand her better...
I got around pretty far, but didn't understand a single thing XD

pardon the stupid question, but how do you get the sub files to work with the game?

Ummm..... Yeah that one you posted is NOT translated. I booted it up and it's identical to the disks I got off this one Russian site a couple years back. Any English in it was like that from the start and the .sub file isn't a subtitle file it's a sub channel file that helps PSone games run better.
So unless there is some hidden option menu that allows for subtitles to be added this is nothing special.
Though, I really must thank you for putting the game into only 6 parts instead of the 87 parts of the one on the Russian site. So thanks! ^_^

Try changing from NTSC to PAL or the other way around.

My emulator works that way by default. I don't think these Lain discs have the right file extension. Shouldn't they be ISOs? Or do I need to convert them somehow?

This is such a strange game. It's more like a disjointed visual novel.

The main character looks NOTHING like Lain should, yet I still find her oddly adorable. (I'll post screens at some point)

I think Lain was reincarnated into her series identity following her suicide at the end of the PSX game.
