Although this topic may not seem very serious, I'd like to take an objective approach to it. Ever since I saw Lain, my experience with ABe has been wonderful. I think his attention to fundamental questions of life is unparalled. But also, since then, something has been nagging me (not in a bad way), and I think I've figured out what it is. In everything I've seen from him, there seems to be a very subtle homosexual undertone to some of the female relationships. It's never anything all that obvious, and I don't think I'm imagining things. If there are lesbian undertones, I think it just adds to loveliness of his work. What does everything think about this?

What's wrong with platonic love?

Why not?

>> No.4

...perhaps no one understood my question?

>> No.5

I like to think of the relationships as essentially platonic, and physical interaction therein as familial or humanistic rather than sexual.

This is only personal opinion/preference, however, since as with many of the great ideas in ABe-involving projects, it is left open to interpretation. The mystery can be more interesting than the answer.

This does make me wonder, do the androgynous characteristics often present in ABe characters make them seem more asexual, homosexual, both, neither?

>>5 You're probably right about them being strickly platonic. I think I've been on 4 (and 7) chan for too long.

>> No.7

I think I agree; but the attraction is always one-sided. I'm not talking as a sexual attraction but it's more than just wanting to be friends; it's almost a need to be in a familial relationship, almost like a big sister complex. It's the same with Lain liking Alice, and Rakka liking Reki. To a lesser extent you see it in NIEA_7. It's always the protagonists of the story who fall into this; and what do the protagonists have in common? Alone, few friends, troubled (or no) family.

Abe not only talks about love or platonic love, speaks of the loneliness of people and as someone else can fill that gap. You can worry more about than others, but it is an important issue for everyone with a little depth of feeling.

The characters are female because I think it is artistic and personal reasons for Abe, I suppose, but I do not think that has much significance. While I believe that transmit much more.

Seriously though... ABe can't write a sympathetic male character. I mean, I think he attempted to with Hyoko, what with the 'almost dying while helping Reki run away' story, but he ends up coming off like a jerk in the actual series.

You are searching an ABe female character on Hyoko. I think Hyoko is well-done typical male character. He don't seems to have issues like Reki and Rakka.

Yes, but we're talking about why there's 'subtle homosexual undertones' in ABe's work, I think part of the reason is that he has trouble portraying a strong enough male character to take the part of the female lead's supporting secondary.

Yes, it's true. But I think there is nothing sexual on these kind of platonic loves, in my opinion is other way of feeling love. You must know these feeling to discuss about this, but you are partialy right.

(Sorry for my english)

I thought ABe wasn't involved in creating the story for Lain. Wasn't he just in charge of character design, as in visual character design?

Wut?
S.E. Lain original creator is Yoshitoshi ABe, no discussion about it, but there are more people working on it. If you see mangas like White Rain and animes like haibane you see the point of view of ABe.

Wingless is correct, ABe was only the character designer for Lain. The only anime he is the original creator of is Haibane Renmei, since it is based off of his doujinshi The Haibanes of Old Home.

According to Nihonjinron (Japanese studies, usually with a nationalistic tinge), Japanese relationships tend to be closer than that of Westerners. I'd imagine that that has to be accounted for; what may look excessive in a Western setting is par for course in a Japanese setting.

Wasn't he the guy who came up with the story for NieA_7?

I think that was also written by the Lain writer, Chiaki, though ABe does have a manga based on it that was supposed to be released in the US and never was.
