How much was Abe involved in Lain? Did he just design the characters?
I'm asking this because of the Lain doujin he drew.. was it drawn before or after the series creation?

I think he was involved on original idea, some episody direction or sub-direction and storyboars. The scriptwriter of S.E. Lain is Chiaki J. Konaka, but I think is highly influenced of ABe ideas.

Anyway, what doujin you say? Name please.

There's a Lain one-shot ("Nightmare of Fabrication") that was included in the artbook; not sure if it was ever a doujin, properly speaking.

ANN credits him as the "original creator" as well as the character designer, and his interviews alongside Yasuyuki Ueda (who he also worked with on Haibane and Texhnolyze) seem to suggest that the two of them bounced ideas for the show back and forth during its creation.
